Notes/Terms:

This is a four-round chess tournament for grades K-8. It is taking place on Sunday, 3/29, at the Chatham Day School.

This tournament has different sections for players depending on their grade and skill. Children will only play against opponents in their own section. The first round begins at 10am and it will conclude around 2pm. There will be a trophy ceremony immediately following the conclusion of the final round.

The online entry fee is $40, and online registration will be open until noon on 3/28. On-site registration will be available from 9am - 9:30am on 3/29 for $45.

  • Pre-registered players should arrive no later than 9:45
  • Players needing to register on-site should arrive between 9 - 9:30am
  • This is a non-elimination event, meaning that all players participate in all four rounds
  • Refunds or credits to a future tournament will only be provided if requested at least 24 hours prior to the start of the tournament
  • By registering your child for this tournament you agree and acknowledge that photos taken during the event may be used for promotional materials by Diplomat Chess

Sections

There are two beginner sections:

Novice: Grades K-3 Under 450

Reserve: Grades 4-8 Under 450

These sections are open to all children playing in their first tournament. They are also open to less experienced children with ratings under 450. There will typically be five individual trophies awarded in each section.

Championship: Grades K-8

This section is for players rated 400+ in grades K-8, and is also open to lower-rated players looking for more of a challenge. There will typically be five individual trophies awarded in each section.

Scorekeeping and Trophies

Players earn 1 point for a win, 1/2 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. A perfect individual score for a four-round tournament would be 4.0 points. At the conclusion of the tournament, individual trophies will be awarded to the top scorers in each section.

Team trophies will be awarded to the top performing schools. A "team" score will be calculated by adding together the top three scores from children attending the same school and playing in the same section. In order to be eligible for a team trophy, there must be a minimum of two players from the same school in the same section. We suggest that team trophies be presented to your principal and be put on display at your school.

Team trophies add an exciting element to the tournament, but players do not need to be part of a team to participate. Individuals are certainly welcome. We suggest that players just enter their school name during registration and we will handle the rest!
