Two non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations have partnered together to hold a charity event on August 29th to benefit the US Chess Federation: ChessHelps, founded by Prateek Pinisetti, a sophomore at Harvard, and The Pawn Initiative, founded by Jonathan Martinez, a junior at Catalina Foothills High School. The tournament for charity has been held the past six years over the board and has benefitted organizations such as KIVA, BASIS Chandler and Legends Chess. For its 7th iteration, the tournament has moved online to Chess.com and ChessKid.com with a focus on raising money to benefit the US Chess Federation.

Registration Details:

  • Register at: Events4chess.com

  • $20 until August 24th; $25 thereafter.

  • Registration closes at 7 pm PDT on August 28.

  • GMs & IMs are free.

  • Players must have a Chess.com account or a ChessKid.com account (if you do not have one, you must create one to play. A free account is sufficient).

  • You will be invited to the Chess.com club after registering. If ChessKid, you will automatically be added to the ChessKid club.

  • Byes cannot be requested.

    Open: 1st: $100, 2nd: $75, 3rd: $50

    U2000: 1st: $60, 2nd: $30, 3rd: $20

    U1600:  1st: $60, 2nd: $30, 3rd: $20


    Scholastic K-8 on ChessKid at 10 am PDT

    5 rounds; G/10; +5

    K-8:  1st: $15 Amazon GC, 2nd: $10 Amazon GC, 3rd: $5 Amazon GC

    All participants receive a participation certificate
     

    Tournament Format:

    • Tournament starts at 10 am PDT sharp.
    • Rounds will be paired consecutively after every game is completed from the previous round. There are no breaks between rounds.

    • Pairings based on a player’s Chess.com or ChessKid rating.

    • Tournament paired based on Swiss tournament pairing rules. 

    • 4 sections available: 3 on Chess.com and K-8 scholastic on ChessKid.com

    • Pairings are done automatically by Chess.com & ChessKid.com system.

    • Tournament is expected to last about 2 hours 30 minutes.

    • Players may be able to join the tournament late, but will receive zero points for any missed rounds. Limited late entry is available but is not guaranteed.

    • Reentry not available.

    Fair Play:

    • Organizers will abide by Chess.com & ChessKid.com Fair Play rules.

    • Computers and outside help are not allowed.

    • Tournament games will be reviewed by Chess.com, ChessKid.com and tournament staff.

    • Players found in violation of Fair Play policies are not eligible for any prizes. Chess.com & ChessKid.com consequences may also apply.

    • Games will be submitted to Chess.com & ChessKid.com to be reviewed and will also be reviewed by tournament staff. Please allow 3-5 days for fair play review before prizes are paid out.

    How to Join a Tournament:

    • Tournament link will be shared the day before the tournament.

    • Chess.com tournament link opens 1 hour before the tournament starts.

    • ChessKid tournament link opens 15 minutes before the tournament starts.

    • Players are advised to participate in the tournament from a computer. It is not recommended to play on a phone or mobile device.

    • Players are advised to join the tournament 20-30 minutes early. If you join at the last minute it may be too late to resolve any technical issues that you have.

    • Players may be able to join the tournament late, but will receive zero points for any missed rounds. Limited late entry is available but is not guaranteed.

    • The tournament starts at 10 am PDT sharp. 

    • Reentry is not available.

    • Organizers are not responsible for wifi connection or technical issues.
