Notes/Terms:

Format: Teams are organized by school, only. (Home school students please see Note [1] below for team designation.) Players shall register individually and will be automatically placed on their school’s team by their school’s name as reported in registration. All players will play 5 games of rated competition chess against players from other teams, only. However, if any team exceeds 10% of any section, it may be divided into multiple teams at the discretion of the organizer. Rounds will be Swiss paired with “team flag” active during all five rounds. A team’s score is the combined score of the top four players from the same team. Short-handed teams of two and three are permitted but are at a disadvantage.  

Prizes: Team: Trophies to Top 3 schools in each section, except Top 5 in Elementary; Individual: Trophies to top four players on each placing team. Official 2023 Scholastic Championships medals to non-placing participants.

Connecticut Champions: Top Connecticut school in each section receives Connecticut Champion trophy/plaque. See Note [1] below.

Entry Fee: $65 by February 22; $85 by February 27; $105 by March 3; “Same day” $125 closes at 9a on March 4. Online registration, only. 

NO on-site registration. On-site changes: $20 (cash exact change only).

Discounts: General DISCOUNTS: Students with financial hardship, attending Title I schools or requesting a sibling discount should email events.CSCA@gmail.com to request additional registration instructions. 

CSCA Member Organization DISCOUNT: CSCA Member Organization schools will receive instructions to apply $15 membership discount to their students. Schools may apply for Member Organization status at any time by email to chess.CSCA@gmail.com

Out-of-state: Out-of-state schools (see Note [1] below) are welcome and prize eligible, except State titles. 

Notes:

THIS NONPROFIT EVENT IS ORGANIZED AND SPONSORED BY THE CONNECTICUT STATE CHESS ASSOCIATION AND HOSTED BY MANCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL. ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE CONNECTICUT CHESS COMMUNITY. This is an official US Chess recognized State Championship event to determine the 2023 Connecticut Scholastic Team Champions. 

[1] Connecticut school. Any school located in Connecticut is considered a Connecticut school for the purpose of this tournament. All players participating on a team must be students of the school. (Players who are home schooled will be considered a team by their town of residence, rather than school, and must be residents of a Connecticut town.)

[2] COVID-19 Protocols Apply. All applicable Sacred Heart University COVID-19 Protocols apply. 

[3] Food Service. There will be food service on site available during the event. 

[4] Rating Supplement. March 2023 USCF Rating Suppl. used for section entry, pairings and prizes.

[6] Refunds/Cancellation Policy. To withdraw registration or request a refund, email your request to events.CSCA@gmail.com no later than March 2 at 11:59 PM. Refund requests not received by email or received after the above deadline, will not be honored. Refunds are subject to $15 administrative fee.
