The City of White Plains Recreation & Parks Department is offering weekly early evening chess classes with instructors from the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, an educational non-profit that has been delivering quality chess instruction since 1990. The classes offer a balance between formal lessons and structured play time where students are paired with opponents of similar strength. Instructors offer helpful comments on the games students have played to encourage application of the concepts taught in the lessons. Students improve their ability to focus, to create and implement plans, and to adapt their thinking when circumstances change. Along the way, they are introduced to the game’s rich history, they learn to win and lose with grace, and to achieve their goals by persevering through adversity.

The program is tailored to accommodate children of different strengths within the same class so that students are challenged based on their understanding of concepts. Players move up through NSCF levels as they achieve proficiency.

No refunds. Spaces are limited and we want to ensure classes are full and every child who wants to participate is accommodated.
